Listener Comments

“The theme of new and different really rings true to me. I’ve never expected to feel German.  I’m content with being on the outside.  Just like you talked about in the episode I’ve missed out on too many cultural experiences that I would have had growing up here. I didn’t go to school here and I don’t watch German TV.  I don’t think you can catch up on that.  Looking forward to hearing more stories and perspectives of colliding cultures.” British in Germany

“So many things rang true with me particularly for my time in London. I also never stopped feeling new or I guess different!” – Expat married to a Brit

“I’ve been in Germany for over 12 years now, and in certain contexts I feel very comfortable and that I’ve arrived, but in other areas I still feel very new even after all this time. At the moment a lot of these areas have to do with being a parent of young children – so this would be new to me even if I was back in the US where I grew up. But being in a foreign country puts a new layer of “newness” to every new experience – your kids starting daycare, preschool, going to the pediatrician, etc. After a while I start feeling settled with each new experience, but it does take some time…and then the next new experience is just around the corner!” – Lenore Bartko
